Rural Livelihoods

MRDA is assisting local communities of the three Mundri Counties become food secure and improve their income levels by producing surplus for sale. Many women in southern Sudan lost their husbands in the war and Women and Youth Empowerment (WOYE) project is restoring hope for these women and their households.

Some of our current projects are:

• WOYE responds to high levels of poverty, unemployment and dependency as a result of many years of war in southern Sudan. The project has three components: food security, income generating activities and training on leadership skills and gender.
• Sustainable Rural Livelihood is a new three year project supported by Oxfam Novib. The project will – among other activities – introduce new farming techniques by use of ox plough and introduce modern beekeeping methods where women will own beehives, doing away with traditional hives that only men could use.

We provide credit to women and youth to do business
We provide credit to women and youth to do business. We encourage them also to save money. By the end of May 2009, we had disbursed loan worth SDG 318,550 to 600 clients. The total amount of money saved by the clients is SDG 111,811. The community bank is under construction. Similar structures will be built in Lui in 2010 and Mvolo in 2012 respectively.
