Origin and governance
NGO work is a new phenomenon in Southern Sudan. The first local organisations were established in 1990s. Our organisation, MRDA, founded in 1991, has served as both a pioneer and the role model for many local NGOs.
MRDA is an award-winning and largest indigenous non governmental organization in southern Sudan. It was founded on 26 September 1991 by the community to give practical help to people affected by the war in southern Sudan. Our initial focus was to render relief assistance to the war-affected people of Mundri County.
We are an NGO by the people for the people and registered by both the Registrar of NGOs in the Government of southern Sudan (GOSS) Ministry of legal affairs and Constitutional Development (registration number 141) and SSRRC under serial number 244. MRDA operates in the Mundri community of western Equatoria state.
During the war years, we undertook extensive relief operations in Mundri County and in other parts of southern Sudan, executed emergency projects in the areas of agriculture, education, health, women, water and sanitation. Currently, MRDA is engaged in education, health, civic education, women, youth and micro credit. Furthermore, over the years, MRDA has built a credible and respectable track record of delivery and has forged extensive and fruitful links with several donors.
